    A researcher from the Paris Institute of Political Studies, Philippe Perchoc, on whether Europe loves Russia as Russia loves it

    The famous Russian director, Alexander Sokurov, said in one of his interviews that “we know and love Europe more than it loves us”. Indeed, we want to be closer to Europe – ordinary citizens want to travel across the EU without any complications, politicians want to forge alliances.

But is Europe as enthusiastic about us as we are about it? Interrelations, partnership, love and lack of love for Russia and the European Union were the focal point of the presentation of the famous intellectual, researcher of the Institut d'Études Politiques de Paris, professor of the College of Europe in Bruges (Bruges), Philippe Perchoc, who visited the Summer school held by the IKBFU’s EU centre. “In my opinion Russia should be deemed a part of Europe. Although, technically, your country is not a member of the EU, a part of its territory lies in Europe. As soon as we embrace this thesis, the dialogue on Russia-EU relations can be converted to a new format. All in all, Russian-European relations are based on a common system of values at the level of diplomacy, politics, economics, culture, etc. It is the attitude of the ex-Prime Minister of France, Édouard Balladur. It was he who said the Russia is Europe, but not Western one. I.e. when discussing Russia-EU relations, we should speak of relations within Europe – Western and Eastern one.
