Dr Yves Gambier, professor emeritus of the University of Turku visited the University in November 29-December 6, 2015.  Dr Gambier has widespread research interests - audiovisual translation, translation theory, language policy and language planning, bilingualism, and discourse analysis among others. The programme of his stay in IKBFU was rather varied – discussion on changing landscape in translation for BA students, research seminar with MA and PhD students majoring in Translation , numerous meeting with IKBFU students and professors. The highlight of the visit was an intensive training of trainers course for the faculty of the Department of Translation and Interpreting. The course was a follow up to a training programme organized by Dr Yves Gambier in Turku in April 2008. The new course was built around the process of translation, as well as translation methodology and didactics.
The history of cooperation between IKBFU and Dr Yves Gambier goes back to 2001 when the Department of Translation and Interpreting was set up at IKBFU. During all these years, and sometimes with his colleague Jackie Välimäki, Dr Yves Gambier has initiated many positive changes in curriculum design, training interpreters and translators and doing serious research in translation studies.
Yves Gambier has authored more than 180 articles and edited or co-edited 22 books. He is a member of multiple editorial boards such as Target, Babel and Hermeneus. He is also editor-in-chief of Benjamins Translation Library and a member of several advisory boards. Dr Yves Gambier was president of the European Society for Translation Studies (1998-2004) and chair of the Expert Group in the European Master’s in Translation / EMT-project (2007-2010).
The second part of the training of trainers programme will be organised in March-April, 2016.
