On July 28, the Wallenrodt library of the Kaliningrad Cathedral hosted an official sitting of the first summer school held by the EU Centre, which brought together leading professors, graduate and postgraduate students from Russian and European universities. The closing ceremony was attended by eminent specialists in European studies.

IKBFU’s vice-rector for international relations, Igor Zhukovsky, stressed in his opening address the relevance of organising a school on EU studies in Kaliningrad. The director of EU centre, Anna Barsukova, welcomed the participants on behalf of the EU Delegation in Russia. Anna Barsukova announced the decision of organisers to reward the best students with an academic visit to Brussels institutions and the College of Europe in Bruges. The head of the EU law unit of the EU centre, Vadim Voinikov, added that it was a pleasure to see such active and interested students participate in the summer school. The Dean of the Faculty of Law, Oleg Zayachkovsky, welcomed the participants on behalf of the Faculty of Law, which has significant experience in organising international summer schools.

A professor of the summer school, Prof. Mark Entin, stressed when congratulating the participants and organisers on the successful conclusion of the summer school: “Knowledge is never redundant; if you keep it, it will be of use”. Prof. Alexei Gromyko wished the participants luck with accumulating and using new knowledge.

Before the summer school commenced, the participants had been informed about the criteria of choosing and rewarding the winners. Winners were chosen among those who attended classes and actively participated in discussions on the EU structure and topical issues of Russian-European relations and those who succeeded in passing final tests and won prizes. Two candidates matched all three criteria – Ruslan Yakupov, a student of Bashkir State University, from the European Law section and Mikhail Krishtal, an IKBFU graduate, from the Political science and International Relations section.

We congratulate the winners and would be pleased to welcome the participants back in 2013! You can follow the news of the EU Centre at www.kantiana.ru/eu4u/.
