Artem Pungin, an assistant of the Institute of Living Systems had an internship at Giessen University, under the guidance of Professor Ute Windisch. It was made possible within the framework of the "5-TOP-100" Program.
The purpose of the internship was to study bio-indicators which characterize the quality of atmospheric air and its contamination with chemically active forms of nitrogen.
As part of the internship, Artem carried out laboratory tests and took part in a seminar on biomonitoring, where he spoke about bomonitoring in assessing the impact of eutrophication in Kaliningrad (Russia) through the use of lichens and tree bark.
"As part of the internship, I was lucky to attend a lecture course at THM (Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen) on contemporary issues of biology and lichen reproduction, the chemical composition of secondary metabolites, ecology, physiology, new aspects of bioindication and the use of lichens.
I took part in the meeting of the working group of the Association of German Engineers on "Assessment of the impact of the lower plants", where they discussed the modernization of the latest methodology which is used to map the diversity of epiphytic lichen."
