The BRICS QS -2016 international ranking of universities was published yesterday. The IKBFU has climbed 30 positions up, significantly improving its place in the ranking. The University moved from the 170 to 137th place clinching a spot in the 131-140 group.
Academics, participating in the ranking survey, were asked to nominate what they saw as the best BRICS universities when it comes to teaching and research. The expert group of the ranking took into account the following criteria:
Academic reputation (based on interviews of academics who were asked to identify the best universities in their area of expertise. In 2016, there were about 77 thousand responses.
Reputation among employers (employers from around the world were asked what universities, in their opinion, train best specialists).
The ratio of teachers and students. A larger number of teachers compared to the number of students is an indirect indicator of the high quality of teaching.
The number of staff holding scientific degrees compared with the total number of the teaching staff. This indicator shows the quality of teaching and research.
Number of publications per one researcher (only the works included in the Scopus database are taken into account).
The number of external citations in the Scopus database.
The number of international students and teachers. The indicator shows how attractive the university is to international students and staff.
Andrey Klemeshev, Rector of the Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University:
"Certainly, this is a considerable progress in the international ranking. It is the third consecutive year that the University has shown such positive dynamics. This is the result of the work of the University team in the framework of the University Development Programme.
Generally speaking, ranking positions should be interpreted cautiously. Every ranking is based on its own set of performance criteria. It may happen that a university goes upwards in international rankings and downwards in the national ones. So, rankings are only indirect indicators of university performance. We believe that the international expert community saw many positive changes in our university and reflected the progress in their assessment".
The BRICS QS ranking includes 250 universities of the BRICS countries (Russia, China, India, Brazil and South Africa). In 2016, 55 Russian universities were included in the ranking.
