Dr Maslennikov presented the findings of a research collaboration with Kaliningrad State Technical University. The study focused on determining the concentration of selenium in the soils of the Kaliningrad region, using the hydride generation atomic absorption spectrometry (HGAAS) after pressure digestion.

    Dr Pavel Maslennikov:
«Selenium deficiency in soils leads to changes in the antioxidant system, some of whose enzymes have selenium in its active core. Selenium deficiency is harmful to the body. However, in excessive concentrations, the element is highly toxic and can even cause death. Thus, the concentration of selenium has to be controlled not only in the soil but also in plants and food supplement».
