Researchers from the IKBFU have created a bio-inspired robotic cockroach, which has drawn a lot of attention from the research community and the media.
Says M. Patrushev, director of the IKBFU Institute of Chemistry and Biology, head of the research group, 'Bio-robotics is a hot topic all around the globe. Research groups from different countries are creating various robotic insects - ants, cockroaches, and spiders. This is not an aim in itself, however. For us, developing new bio-neural solutions is more important. We are planning to design various brain mapping devices, which can be used for molecular and genetic research. As for now, we have come up with a bio-mechanical platform that is autonomous, i.e. it moves, is aware of obstacles and does not fall over. This technology can further be used in bio-prosthetics, among other applications'.
