    The "Image of the neighbour in the past and present" Russian-Polish workshop

    On December 14, 2011, IKBFU held another meeting in the framework of the "Between the Vistula and the Neman: cultural corossroads" international research workshop. Previous meetings held in 2009-2010 were dedicated to the following topics: "The land between the Vistula and the Neman in studies and social consciousness in Poland and Russia", "The beginning of World War II: a perspective from Germany, Poland, and Russia", "Grunwald of 1410 - the historical memory of 2010". The current - fourth - workshop dedicated to the topic of "The image of neighbour in the past and present" was organised by the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Torun, and supported by the Consulate general of the Republic of Poland in Kaliningrad.

    The meeting was opened with a welcome address by the IKBFU's vice-rector for research, Prof. G.M. Fedorov ,and the consul general of the Republic of Poland in Kaliningrad, Marek Golkowski. The addresses were followed by the presentation and discussion of two reports. The Polish side was represented by Prof. Dr. hab. Roman Bäcker of the Nicolaus Copernicus University of Torun, who gave a presentation on "The potentials of Polsih-Russiah stereotype modality". IKBFU was represented by Dr. I.O. Dementyev of the Department of International History and International Relations, who introduced a study entitled "Russians/Kalininrgaders as seen by neighbours: the evolution of stereotypes".

    Both presentations generated a lot of questions and a lively discussion. The next meeting of the workshop is scheduled for spring 2012.
